It was a short post season for Western Dubuque's softball team, as Center Point-Urbana handed the Bobcats a 5-2 loss at Farley Park on July 10 in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal.

CPU took an early lead, plating both Brittany Buelow and Sarah Mackey (sub-running for Whitney Williams) for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

In the top of the third, the Bobcats tied the game on Ally Massey's double to center. She plated Marissa Kluesner and Michelle Fagerlind, both of whom had singled to reach.

In the sixth inning, "a base hit and infield hit put us in a difficult situation," said WD coach Ron Lehman. "A walk loaded the bases with one out. We had been switching pitchers most of the night and I brought Rachel Drees in to try to get out of the inning. It almost worked when she got the first batter to pop up to her.

"But then she hit the next batter in the foot to bring in the eventual winning run. A slap hit back at Rachel, which she tried to throw off balance to first (base), went wide and allowed the final two runs. It was the only error of the night," said Lehman.

"You have to give CPU credit. They hardly hit the ball out of the infield, but their speed scores runs. I thought our team gave a great effort in the loss. The last time we played CPU we committed eight errors. I knew we would be better defensively. The girls worked hard in practice and knew their hitters and where to play them."

The Bobcats rapped out five hits, one each from Fagerlind, Lynsey Reimer, Katie Ramler, Zoey Weber and Marissa Kluesner. CPU hurler Val Stone struck them out eight times.

The Bobcats ended the season 14-21, "13 of those losses against teams that were ranked sometime through the year," concluded Lehman.
