Bennet Klostermann won the Dyersville City Tournament during his first time competing.
Bennet Klostermann is batting a thousand, to coin a baseball stat. The recent Beckman graduate won his first Dyersville city title in his first entry into the 33rd annual tournament last weekend.

Klostermann fired a five-under par 65 on Sunday to join his two-under 66 at Rolling Knolls on Saturday to top the field and take a two-stroke win from Luke Imsland, with 65-68=133.

"It was really cool to win this the first time I entered," smiled Klostermann. "Even with the weather, I scored what I needed to get it done. We played our last seven holes in rain, the last three in really hard rain. The course held up pretty well, it was set up really fair, but rain doesn't make it fun."

The tournament was delayed by only 10 minutes during the early afternoon at the Dyersville Golf & Country Club layout, when they had to let the standing water on some of the greens drain off. But other than making it uncomfortable for the entrants, the weather didn't affect scores as much as anticipated.

Third place went to a past champion, Dan Rubner, with rounds of 69-69=138. In fourth was Rod Reicher (71-69=140), and fifth went to Mike Tauke (73-67=140), also past champs. Todd Steffen claimed sixth with the first of two 141s (71-70).

In the second flight, Eric Oberbroeckling (77-74) won the tiebreaker over Adam Huehnergarth (76-75), both at 151. Third, fourth and fifth went to 152s from Tom Boge (78-74), Bill Engler (75-77) and Ron Boeckenstedt (71-81). Sixth was one of four 153s, from Jim Offerman (76-77).

Third flight's first four places were 161s, from Adam Moltzan (82-79), Fred Benn (79-82), Barry Olberding (75-86) and Al Gibbs (84-77). Both Jeff Chapman (81-81) and Jeff Boeckenstedt (79-83) fired 162s for fifth and sixth places.

In the fourth flight, three 170s won the top places, from Roy Oberbroeckling (81-89), Ben Zitelman (86-84) and Jason Reicher (82-88). Jon Engler shot 171 (83-88) for fourth, and Jim Cummings (87-85) and Bob Krantz (86-86) took fifth and sixth from among six 172s shot in the tourney.

Jim Singsank's 180 (88-92) won the fifth flight. Double 181s, from Barry Klostermann (91-90) and Marc Casey (92-89) took second and third. Jerry Even shot 182 (86-96) for fourth, followed by two of three 183s for fifth and sixth, from Scott Meyers (93-89) and Don Overman (91-92).

Syndicate winners on day one at Rolling Knolls included: Boeckenstedt (No. 2), Mitch Gansemer (No. 3), Imsland (No. 6, eagle two), Don Scherrman (No. 7, eagle three), Moltzan (No. 8), Huehnergarth (No. 11), Mark Tauke (No. 13), Casey Wachendorf (No. 14), and Loras Boeckenstedt (No. 18).

Winners at DGCC were: Oberbroeckling (No. 5, eagle three), Offerman (#17) and Rick Engelken (No. 18, eagle two).

A total of 113 golfers played in the two-day event.

Klostermann is looking toward other tournaments in the weeks to come. He will play in the Waterloo Open this coming weekend, at the three courses that host: Gates Park, South Hills and Byrnes Park. He is also entered in the Iowa Amateur at Bent Tree C.C. in Council Bluffs in late July.
