LeRoy C. Kern, 87, of Dyersville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Mercy One Medical Center in Dubuque after a brief illness.
Visitation was held from 3–7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service was held at 3:30 p.m., a Knights of Columbus Rosary was at 5:30 p.m., and an American Legion service was at 7. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9–10 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery where American Legion Post will accord military honors. The Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.
LeRoy was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Dyersville, the son of Ben and Barbara (Ploesl) Kern. He graduated from Xavier High School with the Class of 1949, and served in the Army. He married Mary Ann Russ Feb. 13, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs. He began working with his father at Kern Locker, a business he eventually purchased and operated until selling it Jan. 1, 1980. After retiring from the Locker, he purchased hogs for NFO for a few years and then started a Spring Green franchise in Dyersville.
LeRoy was a member of American Legion Post 137 and the Knights of Columbus Council 1734
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; two children, Bernie and Carol Kern, both of Dyersville; a brother-in-law, Tony (Alice) Russ, of Hopkinton and a sister-in-law, Rita Russ, of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Nick Russ.
