Beckman’s 2019 varsity baseball team: front from left, Trent Koelker, Carter Petsche, Owen Huehnergarth, Grant Rausch and Cole Domeyer; second row, Owen Grover, Riley Fangman, Bryce Boekholder, Jack Westhoff, Luke Goedken, Wyatt Schulte, Nick Offerman and Seamus O’Conner; back row, coach Fred Martin, Shawn Deutmeyer, Brock Marbach, Sean Kluesner, Josh Engler, Bennett English, Matt Stelken, assistant coaches Jimmy Boeckenstedt and Connor Klostermann.

“We are a talented team that lacks varsity experience. Our goal is to play the game hard and get better each time out, with the goal of playing our best baseball in July.”

Those are the words of third-year Beckman coach Fred Martin as he looks to the 2019 season and his players. The Blazers will return several experienced starters in seniors Owen Grover, Seamus O’Connor, Cater Petsche and Brock Marbach and sophomore Nick Offerman. They will join other lettermen that include seniors Matt Stelken, Grant Rausch and Shawn Deutmeyer and juniors Luke Goedken and Riley Fangman.

A bevy of promising newcomers will challenge the returnees for positions and playing time. Juniors Josh Engler, Bennett English, Sean Kluesner, Jack Westhoff, sophs Trent Koelker and Bryce Boekholder and freshmen Owen Huehnergarth and Wyatt Schulte bring game-tested skills to the mix.

Martin went on, “This is going to be a tough conference and district this year. In the district, Cascade is always a really good team and with North Linn in 2A, that throws another wrench in the Northeast. Also, Wilton will be very strong again. In the WaMaC, Solon, Marion and West Delaware will be really solid.

“We are a raw team, but our main focus is to improve each time we take the field. We aren’t flashy but we are going to be a grinder team that competes and plays hard every game.”
