Beckman seniors Heather Boeckenstedt and Sydney Steffen gathered another in their basket of post-season honors recently. The two were named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s Class 2A All-State Softball Teams, Boeckenstedt earned a spot on the first team and Steffen the third.

Boeckenstedt led the Blazers in several categories this past season, batting average (.514), hits (71), runs scored (63), slugging average (.717), triples (seven), stolen bases (43-of-45) and fewest strikeouts (five). She was second in doubles (eight) and knotted for second in home runs (two), third in walks (14). She was in the top 10 in Class 2A in hitting.

Steffen was the go-to pitcher for the Blazers, throwing 249 1/3 frames this season to cap her total at 1,042 2/3 innings over five years in the circle, far above any other Class 2A pitcher. Her record ended at 24-13 with a 2.22 ERA. Steffen also excelled at the plate, batting .397 for the year (second on the team) and pacing the squad in RBIs (42), home runs (six), doubles (15) and walks (25) and trailed only Boeckenstedt in hits (51) and triples (three). She tied for second in stolen bases (7-for-7) and was third in runs scored (25).

“Both seniors played tremendously all season and led us on and off the field,” said coach Ryan Meissner. “I could not have asked for two better leaders for this team. Each led in different ways but both were vital to our team success.

“Heather gave the team determination. She expected it of not only herself but also of you and got it from her teammates. Becoming WaMaC Player of the Year was truly deserved.

“Sydney was more low-key but just as determined to excel. To reach as many innings pitched as she did says a lot for her effectiveness and staying power. She will go down as one of the best pitchers in school history.

“We wish them both the best of luck as they continue to play together at Coe College.”
