Western Dubuque standouts Calvin Harris and Sam Goodman have been named to the 2019 Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s all-state baseball teams after leading the Bobcats to a 32-10 record and a second consecutive appearance in the Class 4A State Baseball Tournament.

Harris, a University of Mississippi commit, was named to the first team as a catcher, while senior pitcher Goodman, who is headed to the University of Iowa this fall, was named to the second unit.

“Cal and Sam are very deserving of their all-state recognition,” said Bobcat coach Casey Bryant.

Harris was a force at the plate, hitting .408 with seven home runs and 40 RBIs while drawing 46 walks. One of Bryant’s key mound performers, Harris was 3-1 on the mound with a 1.07 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings.

“Cal has rewritten many of our records, and currently holds marks for season ERA, triples and walks,” said Bryant. “He is an outstanding catcher as well as a dynamic pitcher for us.”

Goodman had a deceptive 6-4 record, and finished the year with a sparkling 0.67 ERA. He struck out 61 batters in 63 innings and allowed only 10 walks on the season. Offensively, Goodman filled the second spot in the Bobcat order, hitting .306 with 20 RBIs and 42 stolen bases.

“Sam has had a tremendous pitching career at Western Dubuque with four no-hitters,” said Bryant. “ He is second on the all-time records at WD for strikeouts in a season and ERA.”
