A 21-21 gridlock at halftime made way for an unfortunate third quarter for the Maquoketa Valley boys against Starmont, Feb. 4. The Stars dropped 24 in the third quarter to the Wildcats’ nine and pulled away to win just their second game of the year, 52-39, at Starmont.

MV freshman AJ Ambundo scored a team-best 17 points and eight rebounds, but the young Wildcats struggled with shooting and gave up 13 fouls as the Stars held them in check defensively for the majority of the night. Blake Becker added seven rebounds, and Andrew Holtz contributed six points, seven assists and five rebounds in the Tri-Rivers Conference loss.

“We had a really slow start to the game getting down 10-0. We battled back to tie it up at halftime and then just didn’t play well defensively in the second half of the game,” MV coach Eric Conner said. “Hopefully, we can get some practice in this coming week and get back on track and into a routine.”
