Parker Sternhagen was 2-for-4 with an RBI and combined with Andrew Holtz on a five-hitter as the Maquoketa Valley baseball team pulled out a 5-3 win in game two of its doubleheader with Midland in Wyoming May 30.
With the split, the Wildcats are now 3-1 for the season and in Tri-Rivers Conference play. Midland is now 4-2 for the year.
Norm Wilson had his first start of the season in game one and had a strong outing allowing three runs on five hits with just one run being earned. He walked two and struck out six, but the Wildcats had trouble getting the big hit as they lost 4-2.
Sternhagan, Holtz and Michael Schaul had the team’s three hits in the game while Jon Seibert and Blake Becker drove in the only two runs.
“We just struggled to come up with a timely hit when we needed it,” said Eric Conner, head coach of the Wildcats. “We had some good patient at bats and got runners on base, but hit the ball hard right at their fielders a couple of times and couldn’t capitalize. “
In game two, the Wildcats scored first on Aspen Kraus’ RBI double that scored Schaul to lead Maquoketa Valley to a 5-3 bounce back win. The Wildcats had six hits in the game as Sternhagen had two of them along with singles by Holtz, Wilson and Schaul.
Schaul scored twice in the game as Wilson, Miguel Bojorquez and Owen Mensen each scored once.
Sternhagen took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but was pulled when he reached his pitch limit. Holtz took on the role of closer to save the game
“I was very pleased with how our guys responded in game two after not getting balls to drop for hits in the first game. Hopefully, we can take some of this momentum into next week and get a few more wins,” said Conner.
