Offense played a big role for the Maquoketa Valley baseball team in its doubleheader sweep of the Starmont Stars in season-opening action in Delhi May 23.
Norm Wilson was 4-for-4 with three doubles and scored four times in the first game while Blake Becker and Andrew Holtz both drove in three runs as the Wildcats thumped the Stars 20-0 in game one. They held on to win game two 9-7 to move to 2-0 to start the season.
Jon Seibert was at ease on the mound striking out eight and walking one on his way to a one-hitter while his teammates were busy hitting the ball all over the diamond. Becker and Holtz each had two doubles and both scored twice. Tim Harmon had two hits and scored twice. Aspen Kraus and Owen Mensen both scored three times.
It was a much different contest in game two as the Wildcats had to fight to help get Holtz, a sophomore pitcher, his first varsity victory. Holtz allowed seven earned runs on seven hits, walking seven and striking out six in the complete game win.
Wilson stayed hot with the bat going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Parker Sternhagen was 3-for-4, two doubles, two RBIs and scored two runs. Holtz helped his cause going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. He also scored a run.
