Maquoketa Valley’s Isaac Zirtzman capped his sophomore season by tying for 16th-place at the Class 1A State Golf Tournament in Newton, May 23.

Playing at Westwood Golf Club, Zirztman shot a 43 on his front-nine and recovered from a double bogey on hole 10 to nab an eagle on hole 12 for a 40 on his back-nine and an 83 overall. He tied Ben Tibken, of CAM, Anita.

The finish was finalized the following day, when each of the three state meets canceled day two competition after heavy rains soaked the already saturated golf courses.

“It was a bittersweet ending to the boys state golf meet on Friday, as torrential rains made the course unplayable. With that said, all the scores from Thursday determined medalist honors, and (Zirtzman) finished out an incredibly strong sophomore season,” MV coach Tim Andrews said.

Zirtzman had led the Wildcats all season on the links, earning a plethora of medalist honors.

“We know he had goals on coming home with a medal, but Mother Nature had other plans on how the state tournament would be played out. Words cannot express how proud we are of this young man. Great things are definitely on the horizon, next season, and beyond,” Andrews said.

The meet was won by area senior Ethan Streicher, of Edgewood-Colesburg. Streicher shot a 72 to top Lucas Gunderson, of Harris-Lake Park by two strokes. The latter player helped his team earn the team title with a score of 322 over runner-up Grundy Center (325).
