Maquoketa Valley School Board members set Monday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. for a public hearing on the 2021-22 budget during their March 15 meeting at Earlville Elementary.

Following the public hearing on April 12 in the high school conference room, the board is expected to approve an overall levy rate of $9.98653, which is 12 cents lower than this year.

The high school has set Wednesday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. for the Academic Excellence Banquet. Eric Henderson, Maquoketa Valley graduate and head men’s basketball coach of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, will be the speaker.

Dollars for Scholars and Senior Awards Night is scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at 3 p.m., with current plans to hold the ceremony in the middle school gymnasium.

High school commencement ceremonies are scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

A report from kindergarten round up in late February showed 51 kindergarteners and 14 junior kindergarteners expected in the district next year.

Later in the meeting, board members got a first-hand look at summer projects planned at Earlville Elementary.

Enhancement projects to the building include a new security entrance that will allow visitors to enter from outside, but not have access to the school. The new security entrance will direct visitors to the office.

Other projects include improvements that will bring a seclusion room up to state code, new paint and carpet in the building, some floor replacement in the gymnasium and additional asphalt to the parking lot.

The board also approved the following personnel recommendations:

• Amity Norton, resignation as middle school special education teacher.

• Elizabeth Weeks, hired as elementary/middle school special education teacher.

• Molly Droeszler, hired as high school science teacher.

• Holly Hoeger, hired as concession stand coordinator.
