The Delhi Community Garden offers free, fresh produce. Currently, the garden has peas, lettuce, beans, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumber, and green peppers ready to pick. The garden is located at 506 6th Street Delhi.

This is the second year that the Delhi Community garden is growing food for locals in the Delhi area.

The garden started with the help of Ann Wilson, FFA and agriculture teacher at Maquoketa Valley, and Keith Pitts, a local pastor in Delhi.

“I did a study and came to realize that a very large part of Delaware County is food insecure,” Pitts explains, “Access to fresh produce is expensive and many can’t afford it.”

With the partnership between Pitts and Maquoketa Valley, students start the plants from seed, teaching them agricultural lessons. On top of that, the students also learn the importance of giving back to those who are in need.

Unfortunately, the students were not able to help grow the seeds for the garden this year. Locals in the Delhi community stepped up to assure that the garden could still flourish.

With Ed and Maria Wulfekuhle donating land, the garden was able to be even larger this year than the past.

Pitts mentioned, “The garden is completely run by volunteers and donations from very generous people.”

Initially, Pitts was worried that, without the students’ help, growing the seeds and tilling the larger garden would be a problem, but volunteers in the community helped.

This year they were able to plant sweetcorn, cabbage, peppers, peas, lettuce and raspberries. Everything in the garden is free for the community, but they ask those picking any vegetables to also pull some weeds to keep the garden flourishing. Rows of produce that can be picked will have pink flags. Red flags indicate that the produce is not quite ready to be picked.

This garden has brought the community together to help others. Pitts explained, “I have been in Delhi for two years and I continue to be humbled and impressed by the care and support the members of our little town have for one another.”
