Maquoketa Valley FFA students attended the district’s school board meeting Nov. 18 to recap their recent trip to the national convention. The high school’s Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management team placed sixth out of 43 teams. Amber Engelken and Mason Kruse, FFA members, represented the team at the meeting.

“We would like to thank the board for allowing us to go,” Kruse said.

Members of the team take exams that judge them. Engelken said that the tests were not too difficult.

“I wasn’t too nervous because I spent plenty of time preparing ahead of time,” she said.

Around 33 students are involved with the program. Most are farmers, but not all of them grew up around livestock and crops.

“It is nice to see these students excel in something they love doing,” Ann Grant, agriculture instructor and FFA advisor, said.

The board also discussed the results of the recent elections and elected a new president and vice-chairman. Donna Kunde was named the president of the board with Mike Feldmann being voted as the vice-chairman.
