Iowa marks one year pandemic anniversary

As Iowans mark the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic, COVID Recovery Iowa wants to remind Iowans help is still available. The program notes that a one-year disaster anniversary can be both a milestone and a trigger for those adjusting to life during and after a disaster.

“This pandemic is different than other disasters like a flood or a tornado, but emotional reactions and responses are still the same. This pandemic anniversary can trigger negative emotions or add to what people are already experiencing. We just encourage people to reach out to those around them or reach out to us. We have people on staff that can help you get through this time and beyond,” said Karen Hyatt, Emergency Mental Health Specialist.

“Hyatt also recommends that Iowans continue to reach out to friends and family to keep vital social connections. Get vaccinated and still wear your mask”, says Hyatt.

COVID Recovery Iowa is for anyone who has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and living in the aftermath of the derecho. The program offers free and confidential virtual counseling, online support groups, personal support, fun activities and referrals.
