Roman Weinberg said it best, “We’ve made our way around the bases.” The director of operations for Go the Distance Baseball, LLC was reacting to the announcement from Major League Baseball that the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox will play a regular-season game in 2020 at the Field of Dreams.
MLB at Field of Dreams presented by GEICO will be a nationally televised broadcast on FOX Thursday, Aug. 13.
Construction of a ballpark located behind left-center field of the Field of Dreams has begun this week. According to Major League Baseball, the design of the park, including the shape of the outfield and the bullpens beyond the center field fence, will resemble Comiskey Park, the home of the Chicago White Sox from 1910-90.
Fans attending the game will walk along a pathway through the cornfield to get to the stadium, which will seat 8,000.
Weinberg said discussions to bring major league baseball to the site has been in the works since 2015. “Denise Stillman, the former CEO of Go the Distance Baseball, began the conversations with Major League Baseball,” Weinberg explained. “Both parties showed interest with coming up with a unique event at the field.”
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement following the announcement. “As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular-season game to the site of ‘Field of Dreams.’ We look forward to celebrating the movie’s enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.”
Weinberg said the fact that Major League Baseball is coming to the site is a testament to the field. “This is happening, I believe, in large part because of everything the field represents and the impact it has on people’s lives. It’s a simple tourist attraction that helps you take a step back in time. We’re hoping fans that take in the game will do just that: step back in time and enjoy a simple game.”
Weinberg said the simplicity of the Field of Dreams is part of the attraction. “When someone is headed here for the first time, they are led to the middle of farmland. They might question if their GPS is working correctly. All of a sudden, they see the field peek out from the road. We feel in 30 years we’ve kept the field untouched for the most part. We just try to maintain it. That’s what people are drawn to.”
Weinberg said the biggest question people have had for him is how to get tickets to the game. “Major League Baseball will announce ticket information in the coming months,” he said. “There is limited ticket availability. This is considered a Chicago White Sox home game, so the tickets will be sold by them and Major League Baseball.”
While Weinberg knows there’s lots of work in the months ahead leading up to the game, he also knows it’s another special event for the Field of Dreams.
“It’s so much more than the game of baseball. To have two iconic franchises like the Yankees and White Sox here is special. We’re very honored to host a game and to have these two teams here.”
