Jo Ann M. Hosch, 78, of Epworth, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2023 at UnityPoint Finley Hospital in Dubuque.
Visitation will be held 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Jan. 14, at Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth. Services will be at noon at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Epworth, with Rev. Michael Schueller presiding. Burial will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Epworth, with full military honors afforded by the Epworth American Legion Post #650.
Jo Ann was born Feb. 27, 1944, in Cascade, daughter of Joseph and Matilda (Beck) Carroll. She was a 1962 graduate of the former Aquin High School in Cascade, and was the third highest academically in her class. During these years she participated in chorus and the local 4-H clubs. She graduated in 1966 with a BS in biology from Marycrest College in Davenport. She was a Medical Technician and was last employed by Dubuque Internal Medicine.
She was united in marriage to Steve Hosch, Dec. 27, 1969, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Farley.
She was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Md., from 1966 to 1968. She was also a member of the Epworth John White American Legion Post #650 and St. Patrick Parish in Epworth.
Jo Ann’s life confirms her belief in the adage “It’s nice to be important, but it’s so much more important to be nice.” Jo Ann was a very nice person.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Hosch of Epworth; three sons, Matt (Jenna) Hosch of Lincoln, Neb., Luke Hosch of Dubuque, and Dr. Timothy ‘Tim’ (Rachel) Hosch of Plum, Penn.; three grandchildren, Zane, Evan and Cora Hosch: one sister, Jeanne Kennedy of Woodstock, Ill.; three brothers, Robert (Lina) Carroll of Henderson, Las Vegas, Nev., James (Mary) Carroll of Dubuque and Alan Carroll of Brooklyn, Md.; sisters and brothers-in-law: Pat Carroll of East Dubuque, Ill., Sr. Joan Hosch O.S.F. and Sr. Margie Hosch O.S.F., both of Dubuque; Ann (Sal) Salamone of Greenlawn, N.Y., Mitzie Hosch and Joan Hosch, both of Cascade; 18 nieces and nephews, and two special friends, Deb Connolly and Paula Parnow.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Carroll, April 1, 2020; father and mother-in-law, Al and Margaret (Weber) Hosch; three brothers-in-law, Michael Kennedy, Allan Hosch and David Hosch; two sisters-in-law, Ruth (Louis) Schell, and Marilyn (Roy) Mangino.

The family would like to thank the Epworth Volunteer Fire and Rescue for their courteous and prompt service, and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Unity Point Finley ICU, especially Dr. Khawar Warraich and Dr. Ryan Elsey.
