Joseph Brian Szymusik, 74, of Rescue, Cal., passed away Sept. 14, 2021 in Folsom, Cal., from complications of Covid.
He was a loving husband and friend of Darlene (Wulfekuhle) Szymusik for over 50 years. The couple was married in the Basilica in Dyersville. Joe served in the army. During his time in the military, he became a Nuclear Demolition Specialist, as well as a marksman.
After the army, he graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in the aerospace industry as a load master and design engineer. His many achievements included a piece of equipment he designed that is on the space shuttle. There is also equipment of his design in the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Ore.
Joe and Darlene not only enjoyed their time with family, friends, and square dancing, but also traveling back roads, hiking, and water sports. Recently they pulled their boat to Iowa and ran most of the Mississippi River.
Joe is survived by his wife Darlene, three children; Amy, Leslie (Brandon Goodell), Chris and two grandchildren (Gunther and Samantha).
His funeral was held Sept. 21, and was attended by many friends and some family that came from Iowa and Georgia.
