Mark A. Hermsen, 61, of Dubuque and formerly of Dyersville passed away Friday, May 31, 2019, at his home in Dubuque after a brief illness.

Visitation was held from 2-8 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville, where a parish vigil service was held at 1:30 p.m. Visitation continued from 9 — 10 a.m. prior to funeral services.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Conway officiated. Placing of the pall was done by Cindy, Scott, Adam and Cynthia. Lectors were Mary Zuckerman and Lisa Sweeney and giftbearers were Cindy, Scott, Adam and Cynthia. Eucharistic minister was Gladys Marfeld. Music was provided by St. Francis Xavier Resurrection Choir. Pallbearers were Adam, Josh and Jason Hermsen, Philip Ungs, Lee Hightower and Matt Urbain.

Mark was born Oct. 30, 1957, in Dubuque, the son of Donald and Grace (Olberding) Hermsen. He married Lois D. Prier April 30, 1983, in New Vienna. She preceded him in death in 2002. He later married Cindy Dolphin Hightower April 26, 2008 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Together they made their home in Dubuque where they were members of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

He worked at Schmitt Implement in Holy Cross as a Field Diesel Technician for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy; three children: Scott, of Dubuque, Adam and Cynthia (Philip) Ungs, both of Luxemburg; his parents, Donald and Grace Hermsen, of Luxemburg; step-children: Lee (Courtney) and Ashly (Kirby Carpenter) Hightower, both of Dubuque; six grandchildren: Madison Anderson, Adalynn, Gracie and Peter Ungs, Ellamae and Rayland Hightower; his father-in-law, Eugene Prier, of Dyersville and mother-in-law, Gayle Dolphin, of Cascade; siblings: Joseph (Lynn) Hermsen, of Farley, Gary Hermsen, of Luxemburg, Alan (Debra) Hermsen, of Manchester, Mary (Howard) Zuckerman, of Livonia, Mich., Ann (Pat) Dunkel, of Dyersville, Lisa (David) Sweeney, of Tipton, Jane (Brian) Bockenstedt, of Center Point, Jenny Dolphin, of Des Moines, Jeff (Jodi) Dolphin, of Cascade, Linda (Brian) Mosher, of Davenport, and Randy (Lisa) Dolphin, of Cedar Rapids; in-laws: David Prier, of Marina, Calif., Carl (Julie) Prier, Wayne (Beverly) Prier and Donald (Christine) Prier, of Dyersville, Dale (Sandy) Prier, of Hopkinton, Allen (Joyce) Prier, of Elkader, Mark (Annette) Prier, of Dubuque, Daniel (Kim) Prier, of Dyersville, Elaine (Cletus) Urbain, of Dyersville, and Janice (Wayne L.) Steffen, of Luxemburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his mother-in-law, Lucille Prier; his father-in-law, Donald Dolphin, and a sister-in-law, Patricia (Dale) Demmer.
