In response to Jim Bonert’s Jan. 27 letter stating “Biden is on the wrong track,” I think Jim “is on the wrong track.” He rants about unemployment payments describing them as “socialistic” and the Venezuelan approach. That’s the same argument the GOP has used for decades in opposing the popular Social Security and Medicare programs and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance program.
He finishes by stating that he doesn’t see the education system teaching the “history” of our country and that “officials” are trying to destroy our country. Not sure what that’s about, but our son has worked the last 25 years in a bi-partisan role in the U.S. House of Representatives, working with six to seven different Speakers of both parties, (Hastert, Boehner, Ryan, Pelosi, et. al.) He and the other “officials” were not trying to “destroy our country” as the cop-killing insurgents on Jan. 6, incited by President Trump, forced their way into the nation’s Capitol, while chanting “Hang Mike Pence” and threatening to assassinate Speaker Pelosi. Amazingly, the 535 congressmen and women, our son, and Vice President Pence took off their gas masks, and after being safely removed from their hiding places, these “officials” went about the work of the U.S. government for the American people. They worked until 4 a.m. certifying the final electoral results of the 2020 presidential election.
I believe President Trump and many GOP Senators are on the “wrong track.” They should be held accountable for the five deaths and the disastrous, devastating, unprecedented attack that ravaged our nation’s Capitol Jan. 6.
