Owen Grover, Beckman senior, was recently named to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association Class 2A All-State first team.
Grover led his team in hitting this season, posting a .441 batting average, the only player in the .400 realm on the team. His slugging average (.640) and on-base average (.560) also led the team, that on-base average pumped up by 21 free passes due to being hit by the pitch. He led the team in runs scored (45), hits (49), doubles (10), triples (three) stolen bases (21-of-23) and struck out only eight times in 111 at-bats. He tied for the most home runs (two) and was second in RBIs (34).
According to coach Fred Martin, “Owen was that special athlete who made everything he touched turn to gold. He was so versatile, he reminded me a bit of Riley LeGrand, another all-around athlete.
“Owen is extremely talented and does a good job at everything he does. Even this spring, when we started baseball practices, he was playing soccer and golf and still found time to excel at our sport. He is super coachable and never has a bad word to say. I’d take a dozen of him anytime. Even that last game we had, he was at the Shrine Bowl and promised he’d be back to play the district game. He wasn’t able to be at practice but he brought his gear and hit balls while he was there. That’s the dedication a player needs.”
