At the Tipton Early Bird Co-ed track March 30, the Beckman boys copped fourth place in the team standings with 58 points.

The Blazers trailed Tipton 84, Camanche 79 and Central DeWitt 69. Fifth went to Solon 56, followed by Cascade 52, North Cedar 46, Mount Vernon 39, Clear Creek-Amana 27, Maquoketa and Easton Valley 25, West Branch 20 and Iowa CityRegina 10.

Pacing the Blazers were the usual stars — several relay teams. Taking second were the 1,600-medley in 4:14.8 (Cassius McGrane, Jude Brehm, Auden Recker and Jacob Schlarmann), the 800-medley in 1:45.08 (Lane Kramer, McGrane, Nate Schaefer and Nick Hageman) and the 4x400 in 3:45.74 (Trent Koelker, Schaefer, Cayden Gassmann and Ryan Schlarmann). Thirds went to the 4x200 in 1:37.93 (Koelker, Schaefer, Gassmann and Ryan Schlarmann) and the 4x100 in 46.79 (Kramer, Koelke and Gassmann, Ryan Schlarmann).

In the individual events, Nick Hageman took third in the 400 (56.21), as did Jude Brehm in the 400-hurdles (1:04.31) and Wyatt Schulte in discus (131-7). Schulte added a sixth in shot put (42-2), just behind teammate Arturo Venegas in fifth (42-05). Koelker added a sixth in the 100 (11.78) and Gassmann came in eighth (12.06).

Co-coaches Todd Troutman and Ryan Meissner added, “We were extremely pleased and proud of how our student-athletes performed at Tipton. With the large number of ‘new’ athletes, we were a bit concerned about warming up/check-in/anxiety/etc, but overall everything went very smoothly. The effort and execution by our athletes was fantastic. And our returning athletes did a great job of helping the younger ones when they had questions or concerns.

“We now have a starting point to build from. Each athlete had a chance to compete, set a time/distance/height and now can work towards improving those results. We also had some athletes in events they were not used to running but they did a great job there as well.

“We can’t single out one or two things as highlights since the major highlight was in actually getting to compete, outside, on the track, for the first time in two years. We are looking forward to the upcoming meets to see what we can improve.”
