A trip to Marion Sept. 15 for Beckman’s fourth-ranked, Class 2A volleyball Blazers resulted in a four-game win that upped their season mark to 15-4. The match was played at Vernon Middle School due to building damage at the high school from the derecho storm of last month.

Game scores were 25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, giving the Blazers their fourth straight win over Marion in three years.

Coach Todd Troutman added, “We played a very talented Marion team there. They had defeated West Delaware 3-0 the week before and were a top-five-ranked team in Class 4A.

“I thought we did several things very well during the night. We served very aggressively for the most part and were able to get them out of their offense enough to make little runs in every game. We took advantage of times when they made errors and made them pay for that.

“I also thought we stayed as tough mentally as we have all year. Marion served very aggressively and made it tough on our side out game at times. They also have a couple of excellent hitters at the net in every rotation. We dug a lot of balls and were able to force them into a number of hitting errors.

“Things don’t get easier this week, heading to play defending 3A champions Mount Vernon. They are still undefeated and ranked No. 1 again this season.”
