Beckman’s boys and girls teams ran to 13th place at the Oelwein Cross Country Invitational Sept 3 at Hickory Grove Country Club.
The boys tallied 381 points, trailing winners Decorah at 44, followed by Waverly-Shell Rock 47, Center Point-Urbana 75, North Fayette Valley 122, Denver 128, Jesup 145, West Delaware 192, Union 221, Sumner-Fredericksburg 235, Oelwein 279, Edgewood-Colesburg 290 and Don Bosco 357. The Blazers edged Wapsie Valley at 416.
Danil Wall led the Blazers in 60th place with a time of 19:59. Also counting were Isaac Schlarmann (86th — 21:35), Nate Schaefer (89th — 23:08), Jack Gehling (90th — 21:56) and Auden Recker (94th —23:08). Cassius McGrane (95th — 23:22) and Isaac Westhoff (96th — 23:46) ran sixth and seventh on the team.
Coach Tyson Squiers was pleased. “Compared to our 2017 race, we dropped almost 40 points off our score as well as a 30-second improvement on our average time. Danil once again led our runners and missed his own PR by a few seconds. He is always very consistent with his pacing and times and I know he’s right on the edge of dropping a bunch of time soon. Our next three, Isaac, Nate and Jack, all finished within 20 seconds of each other. When we have three or four guys working together and pack-running, the times are going to drop as well as points. They push each other very well.
“Isaac ran two minutes faster than his previous time at this course. Nate continued to show that his addition to the team is very important and Jack made his 5K debut. He has also become a big part of our success this year. Auden and Cassius ran together, both posting season bests. Isaac showed great improvement, dropping two minutes from last week. Everything is really starting to click and I can’t wait to see what it can be at the end of the season.”
Isabelle Kluesner led the girls (50th — 23:42), followed by Olivia Thier (65th — 24:56), Savanah Oberbroeckling (86th — 29:03), Jordan Thier (90th — 30:15) and Sydney Reiter (91st — 30:29).
Their 373 total topped the host team (Oelwein 396) and trailed winners Center Point-Urbana 68, followed by Decorah 73, Denver 75, Waukon 93, Jesup 96, Waverly-Shell Rock 148, NFV 203, Sumner-Fred 226, North Linn 237, West Delaware 295, Union 322 and Wapsie Valley 344.
Squiers added, “Isabelle led us again with a time that was an 11-second PR for her. This makes her sixth all-time at Beckman for the 5K. Olivia ran a strong race and Savanah continues to make huge improvements from last year. She dropped almost nine minutes off her 2017 time at this course. Sydney and Jordan ran extremely well together, pushing each other. Both have been very consistent so far. With the small number we have for the ladies, they are constantly trying to step up and compete. They do a fantastic job and are very motivated to better themselves. A coach can’t ask for much more.”
Four Blazers ran the JV boys race: Spencer Rea (24:55)while battling some illness, Sheldon Corkery (25:42), Sam Oberbroeckling (27:08) and Ean Brown (29:13, his first race after illness).
Squiers added, “We had a little warmer weather for our second meet of the year. This was the first opportunity for the entire team to compete. We are battling through some illnesses which has taken a toll. It seems like it’s too early in the season for that but unfortunately, that’s where we are. We are still trying a lot of new things in regards to our race strategy. This week we stressed getting out controlled in the first mile, pushing hard the second and finishing with whatever you have left. It proved effective on both sides.”
