Beckman’s boys are headed to the Class 2A State Golf Tournament, May 27-28 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

The Blazers came in second at their district final May 21 at Gates Park in Waterloo, shooting a 339 to trail West Branch by 15, 324. Tipton also shot 339 but the meet came down to the fifth player’s score.

“What a nailbiter,” exclaimed coach Darin Michels. “It literally came down to the last Tipton golfer for the finish. He shoots a back nine of 45 and we lose, or a 47 and we win.”

Nate Offerman paced the Blazers with the fourth-best score of the day, 78 (41-37). They added 86 (44-42) from Nick Offerman, 87 (43-44) from T J Thier and 88 (42-46) from Sean Hinerichsen.

Fourth in the team standings went to Columbus Catholic at 354, followed by New Hampton 355, Cascade and North Fayette Valley 364.

Among the individual scores, Tipton’s Bob Ryan grabbed medalist with a 4-over 76 and winning the tiebreaker over Regina’s Mikey Takacs. Third was West Branch’s Will Bridges at 77, followed by Nate Offerman, Cascade’s Gavin Manternach 79, West Branch’s Dylan Countryman and Brady Knoop, at 80 and 82.

Pacing the Columbus team was Nolan Leslie at 86. Leading New Hampton was Jack Shawver at 88. North Fayette Valley got double 89’s from Andrew Schmitt and Dane Schott.

Michels added, “These boys truly deserve this honor. They put the time in this fall with the simulator and hitting nets and came to practice this spring with one goal in mind. Now that goal is reality and another is set.

“A big congratulations to Nate. He is our leader and is a big reason why they made it this far. He is the team motivator, taking them out on the course after a bad meet and lining up rounds on the weekends. I told him at the start of the year this team was special and to make sure the rest of the team understood that.”

The other 2A teams joining West Branch and Beckman and their qualifying scores are: Hudson 325, Grundy Center 329, Western Christian 339, Boyden-Hull 345, Emmetsburg 335, Carroll Kuemper 337 and Lake Mills 339.
