Earning a composite GPA average of 4.0, the Beckman Catholic dance team was named the winner of the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award at the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association’s state championships, Dec. 2, in Des Moines.

Beckman earned a fifth-place trophy in Class VI Pom. Waterloo Columbus won the division with a score of 371.5, followed by Aplington-Parkersburg 353, East Sac County 352, Eagle Grove 350.5, Beckman 337, Louisa-Muscatine 305, Treynor and Emmetsburg 301.5, Western Christian and Wilton 293, West Sioux 292 and Woodward-Granger 286,

The team earned a Division I rating in Class IV Hip Hop, despite taking a 10-point deduction for trouble with its music selection. Cascade won the division with an overall score of 374.5, followed by Waterloo Columbus 362, Underwood 361.5, West Central 347.5, Ridge View 322.5, Western Christian 315, Beckman 313.5, Van Buren 208, West Sioux 297, Central Decatur 295.5 and Woodward-Granger 288.5.

Paige Ungs earned a Division I/Superior rating with her solo performance Wednesday.

Coach Kaylee Ungs added, “The girls did absolutely fantastic. The five seniors had a fabulous ending to their state dance experience. They were most proud of their outstanding academic achievement award. As the coach and also a mom of one of the dancers, it made me proud to see them be so ecstatic over that award. It comes with a lot of hard work and dedication from all six members of the team.

“These ladies left it all on the floor Thursday. I could not have asked for anything better. They danced with so much heart and you could see that in their faces when they stepped off the floor. They will now prepare for their annual kids’ dance camp and show this coming weekend.”
