Hits and runs were hard to come by at Farley Park, July 12, as West Delaware nudged Western Dubuque, 2-1, in a regular season-ending contest between a pair of Class 3A, Substate 3 rivals. With the win, the Hawks improved to 17-19 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 16-18.

West Delaware’s Logan Woellert threw a crafty four-hit complete game for the win, striking out four and walking only one-hitter on the night, as Western Dubuque dropped its fourth in a row heading to the postseason.

The Hawks got on the board early when leadoff hitter Connor Funk singled off Bobcat starter Collin Reuter and advanced to second when Isaac Fettkether was hit by a pitch. Funk made his way home on Luke Kehrli’s ground out and it was 1-0 West Delaware.

It stayed that way until the fifth when the Hawks’ Tyrus Werner worked a one-out walk and Funk drove him home with a two-out single. Funk was thrown out attempting to steal to end the inning, but it was 2-0 West Delaware after five.

Western Dubuque made it a one-run game in the sixth when Garrett Baumhover drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on Sawyer Nauman’s 19th double of the season. Baumhover scored on Jayden Siegert’s ground ball to the right side as Nauman made his way to third, but Woellert got an inning-ending strikeout to end the Bobcat threat.

Woellert sat Western Dubuque down in order in the seventh to pick up his second win of the year against four losses. Reuter allowed a run on one hit to take the loss in one inning of work for the Bobcats. Ryker Staudenmaier allowed a run on two hits in four innings of relief work while Ryan Klostermann and Tucker Nauman threw one inning of scoreless ball.

Offensively for the Bobcats, Sawyer Nauman was 1-for-3 with a double, Baumhover 1-for-2, Tyler Weidenbacher 1-for-3 and Logan Brosius 1-for-3. Siegert knocked home the only Western Dubuque run.

West Delaware managed only two hits, with Funk going 1-for-2 with one RBI and Will Ward going 1-for-2 with a fourth-inning single.
