Western Dubuque’s boys’ track and field team earned a pair of runner-up finishes last week, at the Bobcat relays, April 6, and the Norm Anderson Invitational hosted by Dubuque Hempstead, April 8.

It was a tight team race at the Bobcat Relays, with Cedar Rapids Kennedy narrowly topping the Bobcats with 144 to 140.5. Linn-Mar was third (115), Dubuque Senior fourth (111), Cedar Rapids Xavier fifth (90.5), Waterloo West (62), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (62) and Western Dubuque JV (9).

“We always look forward to our home meet because of the great teams that are competing,” said coach Tom Jasper. “We were very pleased with the performances of our guys. They continue to get better each day. We had 112 personal bests on the evening. This is an exciting group of guys.”

Dakota Hoffman was first in the shot put (50-2) and Tyler Horstman, Mitchell Ashline, Tommy DeSollar and Logan Brosius won the 4x100 relay (44.54).

Ryan Digmann was second in the 800 (2:12.9), Brosius second in the 100 hurdles (15.14), Hoffman second in the discus (144-8), Ashline, Devin Neuhaus, Jack Wischmeyer and Brosuis second in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:01.45) and Spencer Zinn, Dominic Frost, Ian Fagan and Nathan Williams second in the sprint medley (1:41.56).

The Bobcats were third in five events: 400 — Eli Nauman (54.04); 1600 — Cade Messer (4:45.07); 3200 — Derek Fangman (11:17.78); long jump — Brosius (21-10.5); distance medley — Dayvion Gaston, Timmy Horsfall, Brayden Staner, Cayden Coyle (3:58.28).

Fourth-place finishers were: 400 — Fagan (54.83); 3200 — Levi Meyer (11:40.11); and 400 hurdles — Tanner Nauman (58.72).

Wischmeyer was fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.36), Eli Nauman fifth in the 1,600 (4:52.07), Neuhaus fifth in the 400 hurdles (59.32) and Sawyer Nauman fifth in the shot put (44-6.5). Zinn, Caleb Klein, Horstman and Ashline took fifth in the 4x200 and Lucas Ingles, Messer, Digmann and Eric Monahan fifth in the 4x800 (9:04.05).

Other place winners were: 100 — DeSollar seventh (12.43): high jump — DeSollar seventh (5-10); discus — Josh Ernzen seventh (130-4); 100 — Drake Summers eighth (12.5); long jump — Devin Johnson eighth (19-9).

Cedar Falls ran away with the team title at the Hempstead Anderson relays. The Tigers scored a whopping 238 points while Western Dubuque’s 128 was good for second. Senior was third (123), Hempstead fourth (89), Dubuque Wahlert fifth (69) and Waterloo East sixth (24).

“The boys had to get right back into the action with only a day’s rest and compete at a very tough Mustang Relays,” Jasper said. “The boys again elevated to their competition and put up some season-best performances.”

The Bobcats won four events. Brosuis was first in the 100 hurdles (15.2), Hoffman in the shot put (46-6), Sawyer Nauman, Owen Hatcher, Eli Harbaugh and Hoffman in the weight person’s 4x100 (50.52) and Ashline, Devin Neuhaus, Wischmeyer and Brosius in the shuttle hurdle (1:02.2).

Hoffman was second in the discus (131-8) and Carson Burger, Colin McDermott, Horsfall and Eli Nauman were second in the distance medley (3:54.94).

Third-place finishers were: 400 hurdles — Tanner Nauman (58.62); long jump — Brosius (21-7.5); 4x100 — Zinn, Ashline, DeSollar, Brosius (44.25); 4x400 — Eli Nauman, Williams, Fagan, Ashline (3:36.68); sprint medley — Zinn, Frost, Staner, Dylan Schroeder (1:42.14).

Coyle, Ingles, Digmann and Fangman were fourth in the 4x800 (9:11.72), Ashline was fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.19), Messer fifth in the 3200 (10:18.11), Josh Ernzen fifth in discus (110-6) and Sawyer Nauman fifth in shot put (44-9.5).

Other placewinners were: 400 hurdles — Devin Neuhaus sixth (1:00.78); 1600— Fangman sixth (5:10.91); high jump — Marcus Walker sixth (5-8) and DeSollar seventh (5-8); 100 — Frost eighth (12.34); 200 — Staner eighth (25.05); 400 — Klein eighth (57.06); 800 — Monahan eighth (2:23.89); 1600 — Meyer eighth (5:21.82); long jump — Summers eighth (18-9).
