It was a mixed bag of results last week as the Western Dubuque golf team completed its regular season with a pair of tournament appearances.

The Bobcats took advantage of home-course familiarity at Thunder Hills, Sept. 28, and shot 301 to take team honors in round two of the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division tournament.

The Stelzer brothers — Davis and Jax — finished one-two individually in the second round, with Davis at 70 and Jax at 72, while Owen Sawyer of Cedar Falls also finished at 72 on a cool, breezy day.

2019 4A State Champion Dillon Burr, of Linn-Mar, was the two-round medalist, following up his opening-round 70, at Pheasant Ridge, in Cedar Falls, with a 74, at Thunder Hills, for a total of 144. Sawyer (73-72) was second at 145, Davis Stelzer (76-70) third at 146, and Jax Stelzer (75-72) fourth at 147.

Cedar Falls was runner up in round two at 307 —matching its first-round total — to take the overall title at 614, while the Bobcats moved from fourth after round one (319) to finish second overall at 620.

Linn-Mar’s 621 (308-313) was good for third, Cedar Rapids Washington 644 (315-329) was fourth, CR Prairie 649 (323-326) fifth, and Dubuque Wahlert 651 (323-328) sixth. Iowa City Liberty (347) and Iowa City High (423) participated at Thunder Hills after not playing round one.

Western Dubuque freshman Jackson Webber (84-79) was 14th overall at 163, Max Naumann (92-80) finished at 172, Karson Skrtich 177 (84-93) and Brayden Staner 197 (97-100).

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Western Dubuque coach Ben Wilson. “We shot as well as we have all year to shoot 301 and win the meet by six strokes.”

“Davis shoots 70 (-1) to be medalist, and Jax is right there at 72 to be runner up,” Wilson added. “Then we follow with Jackson Webber at 79 and Max at 80. We are playing as well as we have all year and are getting hot at the right time. These guys are at the point where they expect to beat some of the best teams in the league, and they showed it today.”

Round two of the Dubuque County Meet was played at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club, Oct. 1. Wahlert shot a sizzling 315 to erase a six-stroke first-round deficit and overtake Western Dubuque to win the county championship.

The Bobcats — after leading the Golden Eagles 328-334 in round one at The Meadows — struggled to a team score of 330 and finished second with a two-day total of 658 with Wahlert finishing at 649. Dubuque Senior (357-339) was fourth in the team race and Hempstead (360-363) fourth.

Wahlert’s Ben Vaassen’s two-round score of 152 (77-75) was good for individual honors, while Davis Stelzer was second at 159 (79-80). Jax Stelzer finished at 161 (78-83) and Wahlert’s Will Coohey had the round of the day, shooting 74, to finish fourth at 162.

Webber shot a second-round 80, Karson Skrtich 87, Naumann 89, Jackson Skrtich 96, Nolan Vaske 99 and Staner 103 to complete the Western Dubuque scorecard.

“We certainly did not have our best day,” said Wilson. “Hats off to Wahlert for playing really well in adverse conditions. Some of the pins were almost unfair and it was difficult to watch some of the players really struggle when they got above the hole.”

“Davis and Jax finished second and third individually, but they really are ready to go next week (at districts). I think you are going to see our best on Monday.”
