Members of the Western Dubuque dance team are putting the finishing touches on their state entries for the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association’s state championships, Friday, Dec. 6, in Des Moines.

The Bobcats will open the state competition in the Class VII Hip Hop category at 8:54 a.m. with their entry “What Goes Around” in Wells Fargo Arena. Next, WD will perform “River Runs” in the Class III Lyrical competition at 3:38 p.m. in Hy-Vee Hall. The Bobcats will close out the day back in Wells Fargo Arena at 5:40 p.m. for the Class XII Pom competition where they will perform”All These Things.”

According to coach Melissa Ehrisman, the three routines are all performed to exciting pieces.

“Pom is super fun and energetic, choreographed by Coree Smith. Hip hop is another contemporary piece with lots of visuals and lifts, choreographed by me. Lyrical is a classic piece with a great amount of group work. We will wear costumes with extra long skirts that add to the appeal and visual quality.”

Ehrismann added that the group of 11 dancers has been “working on lyrical since June and started the others in September.” They are ready to face their stiffest competition in all three areas from Iowa City Liberty, Cedar Rapids Xavier, North Scott and Mason City.

“Our goals are to go out confident and put our best work on the floor,” added Ehrismann. “Since we received two state titles and a national title last year, we could feel like there is a lot of pressure but our main focus is to just keep up the hard work and let the rest fall as it may.

“I am very proud of this group of young ladies that I have the privilege to coach. They are hard workers, very talented in their craft and have a lot of fun being a dance team family.”

Team members include seniors Megan Smith, Kaylee Hogan and Carley Kluesner, juniors Kirstyn Miller, Brady Theisen, Lilli Wessels and Victoria Bettcher, sophomores Sam Recker, Jessica Smock and Sydnie Offerman and freshman Addie Feldman.

The group will go directly against Urbandale, Mason City, Sioux City West, Indianola, Ottumwa, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Washington, Fort Dodge and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in their Class VII Hip Hop.

In Class XII Pom, the competition includes Norwalk, Dallas Center-Grimes, Newton, Lewis Central, Iowa City Liberty, Indianola, Fort Dodge, Thomas Jefferson, Davenport North and North Scott.

Class III Lyrical opponents comprise Oskaloosa, Marion, Carlisle, Bondurant-Farrar, Xavier, Ballard, Newton, North Scott, Boone and Lewis Central.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to start at approximately at 8:45 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.
