A 2-0 shutout at Decorah, May 23, put an end to Western Dubuque’s girls soccer season as the Bobcats finished with a 6-12 overall record.
The Vikings scored off shots from senior Hannah Feuerhelm and sophomore Clara Rooney, dropping the Bobcats from the regional tournament. Both players were assisted by senior Celia Lesmeister.
Western Dubuque had reasons to be optimistic heading into the loss, however, after defeating Cedar Rapids Jefferson in a thrilling 2-1 sudden-death victory at home, May 21.
Senior Robyn Takes scored in regulation to match a goal from Jefferson freshman Layla Cheney to bring the game to overtime. It was only fitting that WD’s leading scorer, senior Lexi Banks, would net the final Bobcat goal of the season to win it in extras.
Despite the season-ending loss, the Bobcats managed to win three of their final five games. Western Dubuque will return the majority of their roster for next season, with Banks, Takes, Morgan Simon, Mollie McDermott and Margaret Seitz graduating this spring.
It was the Bobcat’s first season as members of the formidable Mississippi Valley Conference, and head coach Cece Zangara is excited to see what her returning athletes can do in future seasons.
“If the MVC has taught us anything, it’s that with a whole lot of heart and a ‘never give up attitude,’ we can play with the best of them,” Zangara said.
