Going into the 2019 season, Western Dubuque golf coach Ben Wilson expected his experienced Bobcats to be one of the top teams in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

That expectation has become a reality, as the Bobcats fired a season-best 311 to finish second in the MVC Mississippi Divisional Tournament at Thunder Hills Country Club in Peosta, Sept. 16.

With powerhouse squads from Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Rapids Washington on the course, Wilson knew it would take a big performance from his team to be in the hunt.

“We played really well as a team and really jumped up in the MVC standings with the 311,” he said.

Cedar Falls again showed why many consider the Tigers to be the top team in Class 4A with a team total of 301 on the challenging Thunder Hills layout. Western Dubuque was right behind at 311, Xavier was third at 314 and Washington finished at 316. Cedar Rapids Prairie was fifth at 329, Dubuque Senior sixth at 338, while City High (357) and Waterloo East (517) rounded out the field.

Wilson has emphasized depth and balance all season and got that out of the Bobcats in the divisional. The Stelzers — Jax and Davis — led the way, finishing in a tie for fifth individually with rounds of 75. Casey Perrenoud shot a nice round of 80 and Karson Skrtich came up big with a season-best round of 81. Max Naumann was in at 84 and Nathan Vaske 90.

“Jax, Davis, Casey and Karson played really well,” said Wilson. “I am excited for the team moving forward.”

Jack Moody, of Cedar Falls, and Kyle Neighbors, of Washington, tied for individual honors at 73, while Luke Meyer, of Cedar Falls, and Matt Schmitt, of Xavier, were next in line at 74.
