A week that began with Western Dubuque shooting a season-best nine-hole score of 153 at Thunder Hills, Sept. 23, ended with the Bobcats winning the Dubuque County Golf Meet at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club, Sept. 26.
The quadrangular meet on a soggy Thunder Hills layout saw perfect scoring conditions, as the Bobcats had four players shoot in the 30s to defeat second-place Cedar Rapids Xavier (163), Iowa City, City High (182) and Waterloo East (256).
“We were rolling,” said coach Ben Wilson. “We had the top four individuals in the meet. We are playing better than any team I have coached.”
Jax Stelzer, Davis Stelzer and Casey Perrenoud fired rounds of 38 to tie for medalist honors, while Max Naumann was right behind at 39 to round out the team score of 153. Michael Kraft was in the lineup with a 47 and Curtis McGrane finished at 50.
Western Dubuque kept that roll going at the annual Dubuque County Meet, firing a team total of 334 to easily take the crown, with Wahlert (347), Hempstead (352) and Dubuque Senior (355) trailing.
Jax Stelzer took individual honors with a 77 that was the only round under 80 in the tournament. Hemptead’s Kyle Arthorfer and Kyler VandenBerge tied for second at 84, while Max Naumann, of Western Dubuque, Ben Vassen, and Will Coohey, of Wahlert, were fourth at 85.
“It was really hard to score today,” said Wilson. “I am really happy with the results and especially how Jax got it together on the back nine.”
Other Bobcat scores were Davis Stelzer and Casey Perrenoud at 86, Karson Skrtich 95, Michael Kraft 96, Curtis McGrane 98 and Nathan Vaske 102.
Western Dubuque also participated in the Tiger Invitational hosted by Cedar Falls, Sept. 24. The Bobcats finished eighth in a field featuring 10 teams that will be playing in the Hunter’s Ridge District, Oct. 7.
Cedar Falls took the top spot at 313, with Marshalltown second at 318. Waukee (322), Linn-Mar (324), Cedar Rapids Washington (334), Dubuque Hempstead (339), and Cedar Rapids Prairie (344) were followed by Western Dubuque at 345. Dubuque Senior (351), Muscatine (354), Iowa City Liberty (355) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (395) completed the 12-team meet.
Marshalltown’s Cole Davis took individual honors at 71. Davis Stelzer led the Bobcats with 79, Jax Stelzer finished at 82, Perrenoud 91, Vaske 93, Naumann 99 and McGrane 103.
“We had a tough day,” said Wilson. “The course was playing hard and we struggled after a quick turnaround from the day before. I guess we were due for a bad round.”
