Brown Deer Golf Course, near Iowa City, is a difficult test on the best of days. Throw in abnormally dry conditions with some gusty winds, and the shotmakers’ course will offer few scoring opportunities and cause players plenty of headaches.
“It was a tough day to score with the dry golf course and some strong winds,” said Western Dubuque coach Ben Wilson.
Despite the difficulties, Wilson’s Bobcats managed to shoot a very respectable round of 163 to win a four-team meet, Sept. 3, as Jax Stelzer took medalist honors with a one-over par round of 37.
Stelzer is familiar with the course after competing there in the 2018 Class 4A State Tournament, and was the only player in the field to better 40.
“Jax broke out and played really well,” said Wilson.
Waterloo West was second in the team race at 165, led by Korbin Drape’s 40. Cedar Rapids Jefferson was third at 177 and host Iowa City Liberty was fourth at 182.
Max Naumann continued his good play and tied for third overall at 41. Davis Stelzer was next at 42, Jackson Webber shot 43, Karson Skrtich 45, Brayden Stanner 47 and Jackson Skrtich 57.
“We struggled through and got three wins,” Wilson said. “Now that we are at full strength we are going to be tough to beat the rest of the year if we continue to play the way we are capable of playing.”
