Always tough Valley foe Cedar Falls handed the Western Dubuque girls a quick three-game defeat there Sept. 10, 9-25, 6-25, 14-25.

“I think we came out playing a little scared against a really good Cedar Falls team,” coach Megan Scherrman said. “After the first game, we just couldn’t gain any momentum. It was a tough loss for us.

“One thing we discussed in the locker room was that this loss could make or break our season. Our girls made sure it wasn’t going to break it.”

WD’s leaders were: serving — Kaylee Elgin 6-of-7, Meredith Bahl and Madison Maahs 5-of-5, Clare Horsfield 4-of-4, Ella Meyer 2-of-3, Maddie Harris 2-of-4; aces — Horsfield two; kills — Bahl six, Harris five, Elgin two, Meg Besler one; blocks — Maahs two, Elgin and Besler one; digs — Meyer 13, Bahl eight, Horsfield five, Maahs two, Harris one; assists — Maahs 12.

The Bobcats were ready to take on the competition at the North Scott Tournament Sept. 14, won a match with Union, 8-21, 21-18, 15-10, but fell in two matches. Bettendorf came out on top in a three-game match, 21-10, 19-21, 15-13; and North Scott won, 21-19, 21-13.

“The girls came out and played tough Saturday. We had a lot of things we couldn’t get going and things just weren’t going our way, but the girls kept fighting hard. We had a tough loss against North Scott and a tough first game loss against a really good Union team. The girls did a great job of fighting hard and coming back to win in three.

“I knew our Bettendorf game was going to be tough. We had a great win against them last weekend and I knew they would be more prepared for us this weekend. The girls played tough but unfortunately came up just short. All in all, it was a good weekend for us and I was very happy with our level of play,” concluded Scherrman.
