Western Dubuque sophomore Davis Stelzer will join Iowa’s elite high school golfers in the Class 4A State Golf Tournament at the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City, Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct 12.

Stelzer’s round of 77 at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion was all he needed to qualify individually for the state meet, equalling Marshalltown’s Cole Davis as the second individual from a non-qualifying team.

The Bobcats narrowly missed qualifying as a team, as the top three teams in the tournament moved on.

“It’s a little bittersweet today,” said Bobcat coach Ben Wilson. “What an incredible accomplishment for Davis to qualify as a sophomore.”

“I just wish the whole team could have qualified. We outperformed expectations all season and came up just short today,” said Wilson. “Davis deserves this. He has worked incredibly hard to get to this point.”

Top-ranked Cedar Falls advanced with a score of 312, along with Cedar Rapids Washington second at 315. Cedar Rapids Kennedy, after Marshalltown’s No. 1 player was disqualified due to signing an incorrect scorecard, was third at 321, with Western Dubuque fourth at 325.

Host Linn-Mar was fifth at 330, Marshalltown fell to sixth at 337, Cedar Rapids Prairie was next in line at 338, Hempstead and Dubuque Senior finished at 339, Waterloo West scored 349, Muscatine 352, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 371 and Waterloo East 587.

Linn-Mar’s Dillon Burr was the individual champion, shooting a one-under-par 71 to qualify individually, while Brock Barnhart, of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and Will Haefner, of Cedar Rapids Washington, were next in line at 75.

Western Dubuque was in the hunt all day on the always difficult and exceptionally wet Hunters Ridge layout.

Jax Stelzer had a pair of birdies on the front nine, but struggled to a round of 80. Max Naumann was in the house at 83 and Casey Perrenoud at 85. Curtis McGrane and Nathan Vaske finished the day at 105.
