Dubuque Senior wasted little time in jumping on top of the Western Dubuque boys’ soccer team in their Mississippi Valley Conference opener in Epworth, April 13, as the Rams beat the Bobcats, 10-0.
The Rams scored four goals in the first four minutes of play on their way to holding a 9-0 lead at halftime. Schuyler Ridenour, the Bobcats’ goalie, turned back nine shots in the first half as he and the defensive backfield found some footing, managing to hold the Rams scoreless for the final 10:41 of the opening half.
Western Dubuque changed goalies during the break and, with Thomas Proctor now in front of the net, the solid defensive effort by the Bobcats continued to keep the Rams scoreless for the first 14 minutes of the second half. That’s until Nyle Jenkins scored his second goal of the game to give the Rams a 10-0 victory, activating the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s new 10-goal mercy rule.
Dubuque Senior improved to 4-0 for the season, 1-0 in MVC play, while the Bobcats are 0-4 and 0-1 in the MVC.
Caden Abresch managed to get off the only two shots for the Bobcats in the game.
