Maquoketa Valley’s Cy Huber, a junior, raced his way to a fourth-place finish at the Jesup Cross Country Invitational, Sept. 29, to lead the Wildcats to a fifth-place finish.

Huber finished in 17:04. Nolan Ries was seventh (17:19), Michael Schaul 29th (18:05), Mitch Heims 50th (18:53) and Brock Trenkamp 76th (19:23). Landin Frasher and Toby Grimm placed 79th (19:31) and 101st (20:15).

Center Point-Urbana won the boys’ varsity team title with 73 points. Denver was second (89), North Fayette Valley third (117), Waverly-Shell Rock fourth (129), Maquoketa Valley fifth (156), Grundy Center-Gladbrook-Reinbeck sixth (162), Jesup seventh (194), Mason City Newman eighth (210), New Hampton 10th (233), Oelwein 11th (257), Benton Community 12th (285), Starmont 13th (302), Isaac Newton Christian Academy 14th (402), Alburnett 15th (421), Independence 16th (458), Union 17th (477), Aplington-Parkersburg 18th (523), Dunkerton 19th (530) and MFL MarMac 20th (534).

Maquoketa Valley had four girls in the junior varsity race. Allison Hogan was 86th (28:05), Zari Ambundo 90th (28:17), Jordan Hogan 106th (29:47) and Cecily Trenkamp 115th (31:16).

George Livingston finished 102nd in the junior varsity boys’ race in 25:20.

In the boys’ junior high race, MV placed eighth in the 19-team field. Arion Rave placed 12th (9:29), Matthew Schaul 38th (10:10), Dexter Dietiker 41st (10:14), Brady Eike 69th (11:14), Kash Hunt 71st (11:16) and Sebastian Charles 144th (15:45).

Taryn Burbridge led the Wildcats in the girls’ junior high race with an eighth-place finish in 9:44. McKenna Bush was 79th (12:27) and Emily Rudd 116th (13:47).

“The Jesup Invitational was a mixed bag for Maquoketa Valley,” coach Sara Dever said. “A handful of runners ran their best times, including but not limited to: Allison Hogan, Zari Ambundo, Cecily Trenkamp and George Livingston.

“The junior high boys’ team stood out to everyone there because of their support for one another. All runners waited near the finish line to cheer in their teammates.

“Cy Huber led the way for the high school boys, who placed first in 1A, and fifth overall. Junior High Girls Taryn Burbridge, McKenna Bush, and Emily Rudd all ran solid races at Jesup as well.”
