Garrett Baumhover and Dylan Johnson combined to score 32 points, but the rest of the Western Dubuque boys’ basketball team could only manage to put up 10 as the Bobcats fell to Iowa City Liberty, 51-42, in a Mississippi Valley Conference clash in Iowa City, Dec. 17.
The Bobcats held a slim, 12-11, lead after the first eight minutes of play, but slowly the game started to turn Iowa City Liberty’s way. The Lightning outscored the Bobcats, 12-8, to take a 23-20 lead at halftime. Liberty’s lead grew to seven after the third quarter, 35-28, and they were able to keep the Bobcats at a safe distance in the fourth to get the win.
The Bobcats (1-3/0-2) struggled to get the ball inside as they settled for three-point shots but managed to only make four of 21 from behind the arc. When they did get the ball into the paint, they made just eight of 22 shots from two-point range.
Liberty kept the door open for the Bobcats as they made only 12 of 22 from the free-throw line. They also didn’t shoot well from three making just three of their 15. The Lightning’s strength was making 15 of 26 from the rest of the field and controlling the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Bobcats 34-18.
WD’s leaders against Liberty were: points — Baumhover and Johnson 16, Bryce Ploessl four, Ben Bryant, Michael Kraft and Mitchell Williams two points; rebounds — Johnson seven, Kraft, Ploessl and Williams three, Baumhover and Tommy DeSollar one; assists —Baumhover four, DeSollar and Kraft two, Johnson and Ploessl one; steals — Baumhover and Bryant two, Williams one; blocks — Baumhover one.
