Western Dubuque’s Cade Messer competed in his second Class 4A State Cross Country Meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Nov. 2. The Bobcat junior finished 99th overall with a time of 17:14.3. The time was an improvement from his state finish last year when he completed the course in 17:17.
“Cade was a little slower (than what he has been running this year), but we were nervous (because Saturday) morning when he was at breakfast (he) complained of being sweaty all night, was still warm in the morning and started to get a sore throat,” coach Mark Digmann explained.
“He started to feel a little better as we walked the course and he got moving around a little bit. He was faster than last year, but he wasn’t happy with his performance. I thought he ran fine, but that’s the perfectionist and competitor in him. He had a great season and wasn’t far off of what his time has been at other meets this season, he was just hoping for more and a better showing.”
Messer became the first Bobcat since Scot Sperfslage (2006-07) to qualify for the state meet in back-to-back years.
Pleasant Valley’s Max Murphy won the Class 4A individual title in 15:29.3.
