Maquoketa Valley’s boys’ cross country team raced to a fourth-place team finish at the Monticello Invitational, Sept. 11.
Nolan Ries led the Wildcats with a fifth-place finish in 17:07. Cy Huber 10th (17:25), Michael Schaul 16th (18:01), Arion Rave 38th (18:50) and Matthew Schaul 61st (19:42) rounded out the scoring five. George Livingston and Toby Grimm placed 79th (20:54) and 80th (20:55), respectively.
Tipton won the boys’ team title with 52 points. Western Dubuque was second (63), Center Point-Urbana third (119), Maquoketa Valley fourth (125), Mid-Prairie fifth (143), Davenport Assumption sixth (155), Monticello seventh (199), Bellevue eighth (202), Anamosa ninth (211), Jesup 10th (245), Cascade 11th (253), North Linn 12th (268), Camanche 13th (344) and Beckman 14th (418).
Isabel Imler led the Wildcats around the course in the girls’ varsity race. She placed 57th in 23:29. McKenna Busch was 73rd (26:00), Allison Hogan 85th (28:01) and Jordan Hogan 88th (28:24). With only four runners, MV was unable to compile a team score.
Mid-Prairie took home the girls’ team title with 60 points. Monticello was second (74), Tipton third (107), Jesup fourth (111), Western Dubuque fifth (116), Center Point-Urbana sixth (136), Davenport Assumption seventh (164), North Linn eighth (190), Beckman ninth (211), Springville 10th (269), Bellevue 11th (291) and Anamosa 12th (336).
In the boys’ junior varsity race, Landin Frasher placed 11th (20:07), Brady Eike 43rd (21:50) and Sebastian Charles 92nd (36:18).
“We ran very well, co-coach Pat Meehan said. “We talked of mental toughness in not giving in to fatigue last week, and the kids took it to heart. Over 80% of the boys improved their times and all the girls did.The varsity boys ran especially good in placing fourth overall in a meet that featured primarily 2A and 3A schools.”
