Maquoketa Valley earned a seventh-place team finish in the boys’ varsity division of the West Delaware Cross Country Invitational at Hart Ridge Golf Course, Oct. 6.
Nolan Ries led the way for the Wildcats placing ninth in 17:27. Cy Huber was 12th (17:34), Michael Schaul 36th (18:34), Mitch Heims 55th (19:07) and Landin Frasher 73rd (19:51), rounding out the scoring five. Brock Trenkamp was 89th (20:23), Toby Grimm 90th (20:26),
Center Point-Urbana won the boys’ varsity title with 84 points. Tipton was second (87), Mount Vernon-Lisbon third (104), Waverly-Shell Rock fourth (131), West Delaware fifth (147), Western Dubuque sixth (155), Maquoketa Valley seventh (184), North Fayette Valley eighth (216), Anamosa ninth (233), Cedar Rapids Xavier 10th (234), Cascade 11th (257), Oelwein 12th (318), Vinton-Shellsburg 13th (339), Isaac Newton Christian 14th (357), Alburnett 15th (421), Beckman 16th (453) and Independence 17th (489).
In the girls’ junior varsity race, Emma Doyl placed 20th (25:11), Allison Hogan 61st (28:11), Zari Ambundo 62nd (28:14) and Cecily Trenkamp 97th (33:58).
Caleb Livingston placed 110th in the boys’ junior varsity race (23:58) and George Livingston 125th (25:01).
The Wildcats were back in action at the North Linn Invitational, Oct. 10.
“Two of the six high school girls ran their best times of the year, and eight of the nine boys ran their season’s best,” co-coach Pat Meehan said. “Especially notable were the times of Nolan Ries and Cy Huber. The last Wildcat harrier to run under 17:00 was Kurt Goldsmith in 2002.”
Ries was the Wildcats’ leader with his 10th-place time (16:56.2) in the boys’ varsity race. Huber was 11th (16:56.7), Schaul 18th (17:41), Heims 48th (18:17) and Frasher 72nd (19:13). Brock Trenkamp and Grimm placed 85th (19:39) and 92nd (20:03), respectively.
Solon won the boys’ team title with 45 points. Marion was second (47), Tipton third (94), Williamsburg fourth (145), MV fifth (166), Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck sixth (181), Hudson seventh (200), Benton Community eighth (238), Washington ninth (239), Clayton Ridge 10th (275), Iowa City Regina 11th (278), Starmont 12th (283), North Linn 13th (306), Isaac Newton Christian 14th (376), Independence 15th (420) and Midland 16th (454).
Doyl placed 69th in the girls’ varsity race in 23:37.
Ambundo led the Wildcats in the girls’ junior varsity competition with a 61st-place finish (28:09.4). Hogan was 62nd (28:09.7) and Cecily Trenkamp 77th (31:57).
In the boys’ junior varsity race, Caleb Livingston was 55th (22:05) and George Livingston 79th (23:49).
