MV’s Michael Schaul takes Zack Butler, of Woodbury Central, to the mat en route to a 3-2 win in overtime at the North Linn Tournament.

Michael Schaul and Brady Davis led Maquoketa Valley at the North Linn Invitational, Dec. 18, helping the Wildcats place sixth as a team.

Schaul opened his day at 152 with two byes. In the semifinal, he defeated Woodbury Central’s Zack Butler, 3-2, in overtime, before pinning Belle Plaine’s Ethan Hamilton in 5:57 for the win.

Davis recorded four first-minute falls at 220 pounds en route to the title. He defeated Zachary Novak, of Cedar Rapids Washington, 29 seconds, Ethan Manders of Dubuque Senior, 59 seconds, Levi Davis, of Woodbury Central, 41 seconds, and Haydn Stockdale, of Cedar Rapids Prairie in 25 seconds.

Also placing for MV were: third — Nathan Bietz (195) and Devin Smith (285); fourth — Aiden Salow (182), and sixth — Tyreese Crippin (138).

Beckman won the team title with 147 points. Cedar Rapids Washington was second (137), Woodbury Central third (135.5), Center Point-Urbana fourth (117.5), Dubuque Senior fifth (114), Maquoketa Valley sixth (97), Belle Plaine seventh (92), Wapello eighth (80.5), North Linn ninth (63), North Fayette Valley 10th (54.4), Cedar Rapids Prairie 11th (29), West Fork 12th (25) and Linn-Mar 13th (24).

On Dec. 16 the Wildcats traveled to Starmont where they earned a 42-26 win over the hosts and fell to North Linn, 39-36.

In the win over Starmont, Salow pinned Benton Parkin in 1:17. Bietz defeated Jacob Goedken in 2:50. Davis earned a win by fall over Louis Hamlett in 2:39. Brenden Frasher pinned Taylor German in 33 seconds. Schaul pinned Henry Hayes in 5:43. Smith received a forfeit. Arion Rave, Mason Jolley, Kobe Peter and Crippin lost by fall.

Against North Linn, Smith pinned Matt Moyer in 1:15. Bietz, Davis, Frasher, Rave and Schaul received forfeits. Jolley lost a 9-6 decision. Salow, Crippin and Peter lost by fall.
