Maquoketa Valley traveled to Winthrop for a doubleheader with East Buchanan where the Wildcat boys’ basketball team came away with a win, but the girls lost.
The Wildcat boys recorded a win in the second game of the night, edging the Buccaneers 48-45.
Class 1A’s 13th-ranked East Buchanan took the win the girls’ game, 59-37.
After the first quarter, MV trailed, 13-9, but outscored the Buccaneers in the second, 15-12. At halftime, East Buchanan held a slim, 25-24 lead.
The Buccaneers were dominant in the second half, outscoring MV, 15-4 in the third, and 19-9 in the fourth to seal the win.
Earlier in the week, the Wildcat boys fell to Springville, 73-37.
Springville had the upper hand throughout the whole game. The Orioles bettered the Wildcats 19-4 in the first and 21-7 in the second for a 40-11 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Springville remained dominant, 23-16. Both teams put up 10 points in the fourth, but the damage had already been done.
