It was a tough few days for the Maquoketa Valley boys’ basketball team, facing an undefeated North Linn team, Jan. 28, and a 10-5 Central City, Jan. 31.
Going into the game against North Linn, the Wildcats knew that this was not going to be an easy challenge, but the Wildcats never backed down and gave it the best they could. By the end of the first quarter, MV saw themselves down by just seven points. At the end of the second, they were down by a total of 41-23. The second half was where North Linn ran away with it, scoring 31 points to MV’s four to seal the 73-27 win.
MV’s leaders were: scoring — Andrew Holtz 12, Owen Mensen nine, Mitch Heims three, Avery Holtz two, AJ Ambundo one; assists — Andrew Holtz and Miguel Bojorquez two, Avery Holtz and Mensen one; rebounds — Bojorquez five, Ambundo four, Avery Holtz three, Mason Lubben and Andrew Holtz two, Mensen and Heims one; steals — Andrew Holtz two, Ambundo one.
MV’s next game, against Central City, also didn’t end the way the team hoped it to, falling 53-44. By the end of the first half, the game was tied at 26-26. After the second and third quarters however, MV saw themselves down by six points during the half, which were the deciding points in the game’s final score.
