Maquoketa Valley opened the 2021 baseball season with a pair of losses to North Linn in Troy Mills, May 24.

In the opener, North Linn earned a 10-5 victory. The Wildcats did get the early one-run lead in the first, but North Linn answered with two in the second, six in the third and two in the fourth for a 10-1 lead. The Wildcats battled back with one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, but they never threatened the Lynx lead.

Toby Grimm pitched 3 1/3 innings, struck out two, walked none and allowed two earned runs on seven hits. In two innings, Tony Offerman struck out two, walked one and allowed three earned runs on two hits. Parker Sternhagen pitched 2/3 of an inning, walked four and allowed five earned runs on one hit.

Sternhagen hit a solo home run. Preston Roling, Offerman, Michael Schaul and TJ Cook each had one single.

North Linn won the second game, 6-2.

Sternhagen and Carter Klaren had the Wildcats’ only hits — singles.

Schaul walked two and allowed one earned run on one hit in official zero innings of work. In three innings, Cook struck out one, walked one and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits. Nathan Beitz walked one and allowed two hits in three innings of work.
