Youngest Blazers win four of six games
Beckman’s seventh-grade girls basketball team won four of the six games the Blazers played last week.
They began with a two-game sweep of DeWitt there on Nov. 18, 24-12 (A) and 46-6 (B). Leading stats for the A game were points — Sydney Arens eight, Jessica Lueken, Sydney Steffen and Emma Squires four, Leigha Manternach and Kylie Willenbring two; rebounds — Manternach, Willenbring and Maya Osterhaus four, Steffen and Ellie Bildstein three, Arens and Alexis White two; blocks — Arens two, Lueken and Squires one; steals — Arens eight, Willenbring three, Lueken and Steffen two, Squires, Manternach and White one.
Leading stats for the B game were: points — Heather Boeckenstedt 18, Bildstein 10, Lueken six, Willenbring and Squires four, Claire English and White two; rebounds — Boeckenstedt five, Shelby Westhoff and White four, Lueken and English three, Squires, Bildstein and Dani Goedken one; steals — Boeckenstedt 10, Bildstein three, Lueken two, Squires one.
The Blazers returned home to knock off Aquin on Nov. 19, 29-9 (A) and 14-12 (B). In the B game, according to coach Darin Michels, “It was a sudden death overtime and Shelby Westhoff made the winning shot.”

On Nov. 21, the Blazers dropped two games to Anamosa there, 18-15 (B) and 41-20 (A). Leading B game stats were: points — Willenbring six, Boeckenstedt four, Lueken three; blocks — Boeckenstedt one; rebounds – Boeckenstedt and English four, Westhoff two, Squires, White and Goedken one; steals — Squires and Boeckenstedt four, Westhoff one.
For the A game: points — Lueken six, Osterhaus four, Arens, Steffen, Squires, and Bildstein two; rebounds — Steffen three, Osterhaus two, Arens, Manternach and White one; blocks — Squires one; steals — Steffen two, Arens, Manternach and Osterhaus one.
Blazer eighth graders win in OT
An overtime win for the eighth-grade Beckman girls basketball team over Aquin there Nov. 19 was the highlight of the teams’ week.
The Blazer A team stopped Aquin with a 24-18 overtime win. The B team dropped a close 17-15 decision.
Coach Fred Martin added, “This was our first win in overtime. I was very pleased with our defense. We got some easy buckets against their press which probably was the difference in the game.”
Scoring stats included Brooke Lucas 12, Jackie Olberding six, McKenzie Arens, Hannah Lueck and Anika Brehm two.
In the B game, “We led most of the game, but couldn’t hold on at the end,” said Martin.
Scoring included Faye Meyer and Alissa Elgin six, Katie Fitzgerald two and Olivia Jones one.
On Nov. 21, the Blazers hosted Anamosa and fell in two, 29-9 (A) and 23-15 (B). Anamosa broke to a 12-0 lead in the first game.
“We had some good shots, but just couldn’t score,” said Martin.
Scoring came from Olberding three, Arens, Jones and Elgin two. In the B game, Meyers hit seven, Jones, Elgin, Fitzgerald and Natasha Otto two.
Blazer junior high wrestlers open season
Against Independence and North Fayette on Nov. 21, the Beckman junior high wrestlers came out with several match victories.
Grant Hoeger topped Jarret Orr (7-2) and Caleb Grender, of Independence, (6-5); and William Miller, of North Fayette (pin). Kael Kruse won one of three, an 11-3 decision over Zander Smith, of Indee. Mason Burlage won two of three, both over Casey Guyer, of North Fayette (4-3 and pin).
Spencer Schlarmann won twice with a pin over J. Main and a 7-0 decision from J. Miller. Nate Funke pinned L. Dawson and took a 9-4 decision from K. Loyd. Luke Hageman pinned J. Miller, Owen Grover pinned T. Brown, and Ryley Helle pinned L. Dawson.
