Blazers riding win streak

Opening the season, the Beckman seventh-grade girls basketball team have five completed games, all in the win column. A sixth was ended after two quarters due to time limits.

The young Blazers began with double wins over Anamosa on Nov. 10, 36-13 (A team) and 18-12 (B). In the first game, they got 13 points from Haley LeGrand, six from Ashley Engelken, five from Kristi Bries and four each from Olivia Pirc, Paige McDermott and Cambrie Willenbring. Other stats included: rebounds — LeGrand six, Bries and Pirc three and Engelken one; steals — McDermott five, Engelken and LeGrand four, Pirc and Willenbring one; blocks — LeGrand three, Engelken, Pirc and Willenbring one.

In the B game, McDermott, Chloe Ungs, Emily Wulfekuhle and Kaia Hunter all hit four and Olivia Thier two. Other stats include: rebounds — Hunter, Wulfekuhle, LeGrand and Ungs three, McDermott two, Bries and Willenbring one; blocks — Thier two, Hunter, Wulfekuhle and McDermott one; steals — Wulfekuhle five, Thier four, McDermott and Willenbring one.

On Nov. 13, they stopped Maquoketa 21-18 and 27-6. McDermott led totals with 11, followed by LeGrand six and Engelken four. Other stats include: rebounds — LeGrand 10, McDermott eight, Pirc three, Bries and Willenbring two, Engelken one; steals — Engelken two, Pirc and McDermott one.

Wulfekuhle paced the B game scoring with nine, while four players added four: Pirc, McDermott, Ungs and Thier, and Bries got a basket. Other stats: rebounds — Ungs three, LeGrand and Wulfekuhle two, Bries and Hunter one; steals — Wulfekuhle two, Thier, Hunter, Ungs and Pirc one.

Against Aquin on Nov. 14, the Blazers took a one-point win, 33-32. McDermott hit 16 points that included four free throws to lead totals. LeGrand and Willenbring added five, Pirc and Engelken four and Bries three. Other stats were: rebounds — LeGrand eight, Bries five, Engelken four, Pirc three, McDermott two; steals — Engelken five, LeGrand and McDermott two, Pirc and Willenbring one.

Eighth-grade Blazers win five

All of their last five games have gone into the win column for the Beckman eighth-grade girls basketball team, starting with a sweep of Maquoketa on Nov. 13, 44-16 (A) and 30-10 (B).

Scoring was spread among all the players in both games, led by Tara Hansel with nine, Heather Boeckenstedt seven, Leigha Manternach and Sydney Arens six, Sydney Steffen five, Emma Squiers and Kylie Willenbring four, Shelby Westhoff two and Jessica Lueken one, all in the A game. Maya Osterhaus, Claire English and Willenbring all scored six points in the B game, Alexis White and Westhoff four and Nicole Schmitt two.

On the next day, the Blazers faced Aquin and won, 37-7. Again balance was the name of the game, with Steffen getting eight, Hansel seven, Arens six, Ellie Bildstein and Boeckenstedt four, Manternach, Squiers, Willenbring and Westhoff two.

On Nov. 17, the Blazers took two from Central DeWitt, 21-8 (A) and 35-19 (B). Steffen, Arens, Manternach and Boeckenstedt all hit four in the A game, and Bildstein added three, Squiers two. In the B game, Schmitt reached double numbers with 12, followed by Westhoff, English and Osterhaus six, White three and Willenbring two.
