Blazer seventh grade splits with Hawks

Opening their 2020 volleyball season Sept. 10 with West Delaware, the seventh-grade Blazer volleyball team split. Beckman dropped the first matches, 12-21, 18-21, 15-9 and won the second 21-15, 21-9, 15-5.

Coach Margaret Hogan added, “We only had nine girls available for these games, so all nine rotated into all of the sets. Kate Brunsman and Kalli Chapman participated as well, though they had no stats recorded. But the team definitely improved as they progressed through the games, which is shown by the increase in points earned by Beckman at the end of each set.”

Individual stats include: aces — Leah Funke 10, Allison LeConte nine, Leah Steger seven, Maggie Domeyer and Madelyn Simon five, Ava Burkle and Shay Ludwig four; hits — Steger two, Burkle and Ludwig one; assists — Steger three, Simon two, Domeyer and Funke one.

Eighth grade Blazers meet West Delaware

Opening against West Delaware Sept. 10, the Beckman eighth-grade volleyball teams dropped most of their games. The A team fell 2-1 (14-21, 18-21, 15-10); the B team 0-3 (10-21, 11-21, 11-15) and the C team 1-2 (17-21, 13-21, 16-14).

Coach Kim Schmitt added, “I thought the girls came and played very well for their first matches of the year. I’m excited to see how much they will improve as the season goes on.”

Blazer freshmen contribute to Wahlert win

Beckman freshmen Kelly Snyder and Jessie Then were part of several varsity events at the Wahlert-Cedar Rapids Jefferson swim meet, Sept. 12, won by Wahlert 129-53. They also took the JV meet, 65-47.

In the varsity meet, Then claimed second place in the 100 fly and Snyder took third in the 200 IM. The two also were part of the third place 200 medley relay. Snyder swam the breast stroke leg and Then the fly. They joined Taylor Weig and Meghan Fitzgerald in the event.

In JV competition, the two claimed first places in the 100 backstroke (Snyder) and breaststroke (Then). They also took first in the 400 free relay, joining Emily Barnes and Weig.

Soph Blazers perfect for the week

A three-game win over Maquoketa at home Sept. 8 completed a perfect set of wins for the Beckman’s sophomore volleyball team.

In the WaMaC win over Maquoketa, the Blazers went 21-17, 21-16, 15-5. Hosting their own tournament Sept. 5, they were 3-0, topping Edgewood-Colesburg 20-22, 21-19, 15-13; Cascade 21-14, 21-13; and Western Dubuque 21-15, 21-14.

JV volleyball Blazers top CPU tourney, Maquoketa

Winning all three matches at the Center Point-Urbana Tournament Aug. 28 opened Beckman’s junior varsity volleyball season.

The Blazers topped Edgewood-Colesburg, 2-0; Marion, 2-0; and the host school, 2-0.
