Cedar Rapids Xavier came into their meet with the Western Dubuque boys’ bowling team with the 11th highest team average in the state. Jan. 28, the Saints shot 260 pins below their team’s average and the Bobcats came out victorious on Senior Night 2,796-2,767.
An all-senior lineup was headed by Nathan Kramer who had a 476 (267-209). Nathan Vaske 398 (167-231), Bailey Rice 380 (193-187), David Roth 345 (164-181) and Robbie Ludwig 307 (140-167) followed him. Curtis McGrane’s 293 (161-132) was not counted.
Round two narrowly went to Western Dubuque as they had games of 193, 205, 156, 179 and 157 for an 890. Xavier’s struggles continued as they shot 175, 156, 191, 150 and 198 for an 870. The Saints’ Dale Weaver came into this meet with the second-highest average in the state at 236.4, but he was slightly below his average in this meet with a 455.
Jan. 30, the Bobcats faced several other teams for the Mississippi Valley Division Tournament and finished in second place with a 3,100, only behind Xavier with a 3,145.
Ben Heiberger led the way with a 426 (211-215). Alec Nadermann 421 (233-188), Kramer 417 (179-238), Jacob Butcher 416 (182-234) and Vaske 388 (197-191) all added scores. Roth’s 385 (204-181) was not counted.
The Bobcats had an impressive 1,032 series during their baker games with games of 225, 191, 234, 195 and 187. Cedar Rapids Xavier shot a 245 in their final baker game to win the meet over Western Dubuque by 45 pins.
“Our mental aspect was totally different today,” coach Grant Kramer said. “We were facing seven schools today, and today we bowled well.”
Xavier is one of the top teams in the state. Kramer said they knew the whole time who they were competing with.
“We bowled consistent and we bowled well,” Kramer said, “but the other team bowled exceptionally well. However, it was great to see the way the guys bowled today. It prepared them well for the postseason.”
WD will hit the road for their next meet, Friday, Feb. 7, at Cedar Falls who average a 3,068.8 on the season.
