Hosting the Cascade Cougars April 22 at Hart Ridge, the Maquoketa Valley boys’ golf team fell by the slimmest of margins, 191-193.
The loss came despite Isaac Zirtzman’s medal-winning two-over 37. They added a 48 from Zach Digman, 49 from Jake Gellerson and 59 from Logan Johnson.
Gavin Manternach took the runner-up medal with a 39 to pace the Cougars. They got a 48 from Ray Martin and double 52’s from Brody Supple and Justin Roling to round out their counters.
Coach Ron Besler added, “It was a sunny day with temps approaching 60 and the boys finally enjoyed playing in some springtime weather. The scores showed it.
“We fell a couple of strokes short tonight but we’re extremely pleased with the progress our guys are making, each and every week.”
April 23 saw the Wildcats playing the St. Andrews layout in Cedar Rapids against the Alburnett Pirates for a 193-222 win. Zirtzman again claimed the top spot with 44, followed by Digman with 46 for the runner-up medal, Gellerson 47 and Landin Frasher 56. Alburnett counted Cael Neighbor’s 53, Jackson Graham and Noah Mackey 55, Jordan Caton 59.
“It was a cold, damp, dreary evening at St. Andrews with temps in the low 50’s. The kids battled all evening, dug deep and turned in some terrific performances. The boys claimed both medals in the process, with Zach, Jake and Landin all shooting personal bests.”
